Learning from Lord Krishna on Love

Six Enemies of Mankind

The human mind is attached to the sensory objects of the material world. We as humans can see and feel these objects, and so our minds get attached. Bhagavad Gita describes the sensory objects as six vices –

  1. Kama (Desire) – Arising from constant contemplation of sense objects.
  2. Krodha (Anger) – Arising as a response to desires not being fulfilled.
  3. Lobha (Greed) – An obsessive hunger that keeps one dissatisfied.
  4. Moha (Attachment) – An illusion that clouds judgment and prevents one from seeing reality clearly.
  5. Mada (Ego) – Arises from a false sense of superiority.
  6. Matsarya (Jealousy) – Resentment against others who have achieved success.

Also, the Bhagavad Gita emphasises that controlling these six enemies is key to self-realisation, as the mind itself can be one’s greatest friend or worst enemy depending on whether it is conquered or not.

One must cultivate self-awareness, spiritual and mental discipline to overcome the above. Self-awareness and constant introspection of realising which of the six vices above are uncontrolled is the key. Human beings should make conscious efforts to control getting attached to material aspects.

Staying away from being overly obsessive, competitive and delusional can help in many ways. To live a balanced life, moderation is the key. It helps avoid the negative consequences of extremes, leading to overall balanced physical and mental health.

Often, we see people trying to gain an upper hand over others to demonstrate their own value. If this is done in moderation and with mutual respect then it is reasonable. However, if in the process of gaining an upper hand if anyone displays any of the above six behaviours, it becomes damaging to his/her own reputation, leading to outcomes which are destructive and relationships which get damaged.

Consistent spiritual practices can help one lead a balanced life towards positive ends. One should work towards checking the balance constantly, which will lead to highly positive outcomes.
